Homer Sykes, British traditions
"Sykes has produced bodies of photographic work on subjects as diverse a Celtic Britain, the Notting Hill Carnival riots of 1976, youth sub-cultures of the 1980s and many other aspects of social change and everyday life in England since the 1960s."
"During his career as well as his commercial magazine assignments Homer has worked on personal photographic documentary projects. These include documenting traditional British folklore customs, that started in 1970 and completed seven years later resulting in the publication Once a Year, Some Traditional British Customs"
Slightly like the photography Tony Ray jones who i previously researched, homer sykes captures images of unusual british traditions. When researching into his work, i found he has several shoots of british shrove tuesday traditions. This is a perfect area for me to research into as in my own village there is a tradition which has gone for centuries now called the shrove tuesday ball game. I've felt photography a tradition in a north east village would be the prefect chance to get a series of images with narrative, to do with the north east!
Shrove Tuesday.
ASHBOURNE DERBYSHIRE SHROVE TUESDAY FOOTBALL UK
Although i don't think these images are of great standard, its what the images have been taken of which is the most interesting part. I suppose such unusual occurrences and traditions such as this don't need to be photographed in a unique or 'interesting' way.
SKIPPING SCARBOROUGH SHROVE TUESDAY YORKSHIRE ENGLAND
Possibly because this shrove tuesday is less of a riot and expectedly easier to photograph is why this is such a nice shot In comparison to the previous images. However i must admit i personally find it more interesting to look at the shrove tuesday football images as appose to this one as whats happening in those images is far more unique and unusual.
